This is a MK 83 bomb that Israel dropped near Srifa, Lebanon in July 2006. It is one of nearly one million unexploded munitions (UXO) that are estimated to be in Southern Lebanon due to the Israeli attack of 2006. The hazard of all of this UXO will persist in Lebanon for years - in fact, decades. Here, after evacuating a 1 km radius of all people around the bomb site, a UN Belgium team has defused the bomb and is loading it onto a truck to dispose of it.

The Al Khiam prison was used by Israel while it occupied Southern Lebanon. Political prisoners were held here for years and interogated and tortured. When Israel was expelled from the region in 2000, the prison became a museum where captured Israeli war machinery, torture devices and the prison itself were open to public viewing. In July 2006, Israel bombed the prison museum. Residents of Al Khiam claim the location was bombed because Israel was embarrassed by the museum. It is also likely that the location was bombed because its location offers a significant military vantage point. The 4 UN persons who were killed by Israel were in a building on the same hill.

During the Israeli attack on Lebanon in July 2006, the town of Aita ech Chaab was pummeled severely. The Ridda family and several others - a total of over 25 took refuge in the basement of a building for several days. At one point, the father stepped into an adjacent room for his morning prayers and was killed by an Israeli missile. Here the Ridda family shows the Koran that was with him when he was killed.

Over 25 people took refuge in the basement of this building for days during the bombardment by Israel in July 2006. They survived, but the father of one family inside was killed by an Israeli missile during his morning prayers. It was possibly placed by another for a photograph - it is also more likely that it was set down by someone sorting through the rubble. Whatever the story of why the doll lays here - it is important to know that I didnt put it there. The reality of the destruction to this town is staggering. Wasting time accusing people of fauxtography for images like this is really missing the forest for the tree.

Naurits De Nuer of the UN Belgium UXO team de-fuzed the one thousand pound MK 83 bomb that Israel dropped near the town of Srifa in Southern Lebanon. This thousand pound bomb is one of nearly one million unexploded munitions (UXO) estimated to be in Southern Lebanon. The hazard will persist in Lebanon for years - in fact, decades. 60 teams are currently working in Southern Lebanon to render harmless all of this UXO.

We hope the UN maintain their criteria in helping us now and help to defend us from Israel, he said. In reality, the UN should be in Israel to defend us from them, since they were the ones who invaded Lebanon, not vice versa.

Hezbollah provided the family, and thousands of other families, thousands of dollars to rent an apartment until theirs can be rebuilt, but the reconstruction and aid from the Lebanese government has been noexistant.
