A rope team on the Hotlum glacier

Crevasses like this one on the Hotlum Glacier on Mount Shasta present a hazard to climbers. Ideally, the rope team would be perpendicular to the crevasses to protect from a hidden crevasse covered with snow. Here, if Tim punched through to some unseen crevasse, the rope would catch his fall....but if he decided to jump into the crevasse we see...Im not sure that the rope would do much for him.

Crevasses are often covered with bridges of snow. The possibility of a snow bridge collapsing is why teams of climbers travel roped up on a glacier. This bridge is not collapsing anytime soon, but it give you a sense of the caverns that exist underfoot while travelling on the Htolum Glacier on Mount Shasta.

Climbing Shasta at Dawn

On our final day, Nettie and I made a bid for the 14K foot summit from out 12K foot base camp. While we were well acclimated, felt in great shape, Shasta had some fierce winds and temperatures well below what we had expected waiting for us. Part way up one of the ice gullies on the Hotlum headwall, we started drilling v threads into the ice and began rapelling back to camp. The Hotlum glacier route to the summit would be outstanding. Well come back when the weather cooperates!

From left to right: Mount Sill, Polemonium Peak and the North Palisade are 3 14,000 plus foot peaks in the Palisades above the Palisade glacier. The Palisade glacier here terminates in a glacial lake full of glacial ice and snow from the winter. The U notch and V notch couloirs are also visible in the cirque headwall.

A climber in the bergschrund below the U Notch Couloir. The Palisade glacier is ringed by a large bergschrund where it is pulling away from the cliffs the ring the cirque. Climbing the U Notch couloir requires negotiating through the bergschrund.

The Palisade Glacier is the Sierras largest glacier.

Here at the terminus of the glacier, the Palisade glacier feeds a small lake. The Palisade glacier lake is full of chunks of ice literally calving from the snout of the glacier, as well as remnants of snow from the winter. The Palisades are a sub range of mountains in Californias Sierra Nevada range.

The Palisade Glacier is the Sierra Nevadas largest glacier. The Palisade Glacier is also unique in that the glacier ends in a small lake. The glacier literally calves off into the lake. The spectacular Palisades ring the glacier. Many of Californias 14,000 foot peaks are in the Palisades.

Hiking on the blue ice at the terminus of the Palisade glacier is a great thing to do. Here a rock on the glacier has prevented the ice below it from melting as the rest of the ice has melted. Exploring a living glacier is a good way to understand concepts such as glacial erratics and ablation.

The U Notch is an ice climb later in fall. This years big snow year means that towards the end of July, there was plenty of hard snow in the Couloir, as well as some ice. The climb is a moderate climb. Maybe about 40 degrees. In these conditions, we were happy with a single mountain axe and aluminum alloy crampons. The U Notch Couloir is a route towards the summit of the North Palisade in the Palisades, Sierras, California.

West Buttress Route, Denali, Mt McKinley, Alaska.

The Alaksa Range in Alaska is a large range of mountains. The mountain climbers in the Alakska Range begin to have a sense of how much climbing there is in the range. The problem with climbing in the Alaska range is that there is so much climbing there that it can be very difficult for a mountaineer or a climber to decide where to climb. This is why aerial photography of the Alaska range has been an important tool for climbers in the Alaska Range. Mountains like Denali, Mount Hunter, Mount Foraker were initially climbed using aerial photographs of the mountains. The aerial photographs of the Alaska range have proven to be invaluable to mountaineers planning on climbing in the Alaska Range. Using aerial photographs mountaineers in the Alaska Range have been able to pick out new routes on Denali, Foraker, Mount Hunter and many other peaks. This website contains a large collection of aerial photography of the Alaska range which climbers can use when planning a climb in the Alaska range. The West Buttress route on Denali, for example, can be clearly seen in many of the aerial photographs of Denali on this website. The West Buttress of Denali is a long route, relatively moderate in difficulty. Though teams need to be prepared for the challenges of climbing such a difficult route such as the West Buttress of Denali, the West Buttress can clearly be seen in aerial photographs of Denali and the West Buttress. Using aerial photography climbers of the West Buttress are in a better position to inform and prepare themselves for what is a difficult climb on Denali. Climbing Denali is difficult. Aerial photographs of Denali can assist a climber in preparation for the climb.
