The New York Times sent me to British Columbia, Canada to photograph the helicopter hiking that is happening there. As a wilderness purist who has spent substantial time in the mountains, with all my summits earned only through sweat, I wasn't sure what I'd think of catching a ride to pristine alpine environments in a helicopter - but the experience proved that these disappearing environments are as special however you arrive, and that perhaps a helicopter is the only way to deliver many people to visit them.
