Photographer Pflueger has been guiding rafters since before he could drive. For the opening photo of The Basics, the former Outward Bound Instructor used a remote-controlled camera device (harnessed to a kite for the self-portrait below): "The raft was so loaded up that I strung up a cable to shoot it from above."
