Some Stories on Iraqi Refugees we did in Damascus, Syria

aljazeera_iraqi_refugees_th.jpgAl Jazeera English runs a couple of stories that we did in Damascus.

One story was based on an interview we conducted with Badie Izzat, head of the defence team representing those accused of gassing the Kurds in Halabja during the Anfal campaign in 1986. He was arrested by the court because the judge did not like the things that he said. The resulting situation was so dangerous, and such an embarrassment to the integrity of the court itself, that the Americans gave him safe passage out of Iraq so that he wouldn't be killed. He is now essentially in exile in Syria.

As a defense lawyer, Izzat was arrested by the Iraqi court because the judge did not like the things that Izzat said both inside and outside court. The resulting situation was so dangerous, and such an embarrassment to the integrity of the court itself, that the Americans gave Izzat safe passage out of Iraq so that he wouldn't be killed. A story about Iraqi doctors that have had to flee their country because of death threats. They are now in Damascus, doing what they can to get by, and continuing their practice by treating other refugees.
