This photo is of the West Buttress Route on Denali taken from 24,000 feet in a Cessna 206. I had O2 for the flight, but even with o2, heading to 24K unacclimatized is a wild experience; I don't remember much from this flight! Thanks to the best photography shop in the Bay Area, Keeble and Schuchat, for their support of the project. It was their Canon 1ds Mark III and 24-105 lens that made this photo - one of my favorites from the shoot.

The project is described on the O'Reilly website as "a group of internationally renowned photographers will travel to the end of the world, literally, to the remote island of Tasmania. Their mission is to road test specialized digital photography software designed by Adobe while capturing images from one of the world's most mysterious and varied geographic locations"

Read about the project here and keep to date with our daily blogging and image uploads

In addition to shooting, I'll be the on-the-ground web producer - helping to aggregate and edit all those images we're capturing and publish them broadly across the web. The wheels are spinning for me to help to come up with the most efficient way that we can get our images out far and wide on the web and still have plenty of time to road test Adobe's software and to shoot.

The plan, at this point (we all know about plans!), hinges on us using Digital Railroad to collectively manage our online assets. We'll do our daily editing there, and then code I wrote takes the most recent images uploaded to Digital Railroad and presents thumbnails or enlargements however I want to show them with a little code snippit that can be pasted into blogs and websites very easily.

If you get a chance, take a peek at the website - and enter for a free trip to Tasmania

      Lightroom Mastery
Wednesday, January 23
Monday, February 4
6-10 pm

In my opinion, with Adobe's Lightroom, I feel that photographers finally have a
sophisticated and time-saving software tool that matches the challenges,
new demands and opportunities of digital photography. Lightroom is 95% of what I use these days for post production and organization of a shoot.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to use Lightroom efficiently and effectively for the post production RAW workflow from import images from a camera, organization, captioning and keywording in the Library module, to advanced color correction, spot removal, sharpening and more in the Develop module to publishing webpages in the Web module.

We will be using Mikkel Aalland's excellent book Lightroom Adventure as a text. The first evening I will summarize and demonstrate important concepts from the book. Attendees will then have over a week between sessions to practice. The second evening will be more hands-on with participants actually importing a shoot from cards and taking a selection of them through to web publication.

The dates are:
Wednesday, January 23
Monday, February 4
6-10 pm

Cost $250 - min of 4, max of 6 - additional cost for book

Location: San Francisco

Space is limited to a maximum of six, so call 510 847 0650 to check availablity, and reserve your space now by paying online with the button below.

One story was based on an interview we conducted with Badie Izzat, head of the defense team representing those accused of gassing the Kurds in Halabja during the Anfal campaign in 1986. As a defense lawyer, Izzat was arrested by the Iraqi court because the judge did not like the things that Izzat said both inside and outside court. The resulting situation was so dangerous, and such an embarrassment to the integrity of the court itself, that the Americans gave Izzat safe passage out of Iraq so that he wouldn't be killed. He is now essentially in exile in Syria.

"It takes you to some of the national parks' most spectacular spots, but our favorite sites were discovered in between," says writer Sundeen (above, left), who drove the 1,700-mile byway with photographer Pflueger (above, right) for our feature. "Stanton was the moment for me," Pflueger says, of an odd little Arizona encampment they came across. "To meet people reinhabiting a ghost town and playing out their gold-mining dreams in the desert was like seeing the Old West come alive."
